If you even a semi frequent reader of this blog, you know that I love in the Pacific Northwest. And while I love where I live, our weather is sporadic at best. Not kidding it had been 80F and terribly hot up until the DAY BEFORE my appointment to pick up my Goodyear® Assurance® WeatherReady™ tires. Then suddenly, it’s fall. Pouring rain, chilling wind, and suddenly everyone forgets how to drive. Sound familiar? Yes, the glorious changing of the seasons. And for someone like me, who loves any excuse to get away for the weekend. Whether that be into the mountains, down the coast, or over the pass – it’s important to be what I call winter road trip ready.
So, like I said before I was contacted recently to try out the best all-weather tires currently offered by Goodyear®. It was perfect timing, and guys I have to tell you – the process was so much more painless than what I was expecting. I used to be one of those girls who had to call their dad when I was in need of new tires, but Sam’s Club Tire Selector Tool makes it so simple. Just put in your vehicle information and BAM. Tons of tires. And the best part? Right now you can get $80 off instantly* on a set of four Goodyear® tires. Now, that being said, let’s get into how I get winter road trip ready.
Small disclaimer: keep in mind this tire only fits certain vehicles. Check samsclub.com to find your tire size for your vehicle. SO, step one – I cannot stress enough the importance of GOOD, quality tires that are suitable for all different kinds of weather conditions. I’m not even kidding, the day before I got these tires like I said before it started raining, right? So here I am, sitting at a red light minding my own business and then, the light turns green. So, I go to accelerate (not pedal to the floor here people, just normal acceleration) and I’m not going anywhere because my tires are just spinning. It was equal parts embarrassing and confusing because my tires weren’t even bald. They were just cheap tires. But one thing was clear, I would not last driving those babies through fall and winter.
In addition to making sure your tires are winter ready, you should prepare the rest of your vehicle as well. This means oil change, topping off fluids, new windshield wipers (literally one of the most satisfying things), etc. And the rest of my must have list?
Beanie/Sunglasses ComboYeah, seems like they don’t go together but if you live in the PNW or somewhere with similar weather you can go from blinding sunlight, to a snowstorm, to pouring rain and then back to sun again. Ergo, beanie and sunglasses.
A MapNo folks, this map is not just for cute Insta’s. Coming from someone who has been genuinely and terrifying lost in the Olympic Mountains with no cell service, gravel roads, and no signage… Trust me, a map is useful. And sometimes necessary.
A Comprehensive First Aid KitIf you’re not a first aid kit person, it means you’ve never had one. Because I swear, I was totally not into the whole mom first aid kit thing (just to be clear, I’m still not a mom) but then I was gifted one a few years back and I’ve never looked back. You can get some really great ones at a local outdoors retailer and they’re not just band aids and aspirin, guys. These things have some seriously useful items: burn cream (if you follow me on Snapchat [@kayticlayton] you saw my incredibly disgusting burn on my hand from… yep, a cup of noodles and you can bet I ran my butt over to this kit for some burn cream), gauze, butterfly bandages, emergency blanket, the list goes on.
Some other useful items? Some firewood, non-perishable food items, an air mattress (I always keep one of these in my trunk for an impromptu overnight trip), blankets, lighter/matches, rain boots (another staple of mine), and a towel (you’d be surprised how often you use it once it’s there).
What are some of your winter road trip must haves? If I’m forgetting any big ones, please leave it in the comments!
